It’s a new year which means its time for a new profile picture, right? For some of us this is something we look forward to, while others dread it.
Hopefully, these tips from our Bluebird Chic Ambassadors will help inspire you to take a few great selfies and get those profile pics updated!
Tip #1 – RELAX and just be you!
Jessica of Yeah She Snaps Photography says,
Self portraits can be intimidating, but to your family and friends, it means everything when you get in the frame. The most important thing? Relax and be YOU. I am a morning coffee and quiet time lover and I wanted this photo to reflect just that. Don’t feel pressure to look right into your lens if it makes you uncomfortable. Capture yourself as you would tell others you’d like to capture them. Naturally, and in their element. Your family will thank you for it!
Tip #2 – Use a remote or interval timer.
Emily of Everbranch Photography says,
Remotes definitely help. You can also check out your camera’s interval timer. They let you take a certain number of photos over a set amount of time, like 2 photos every 5 minutes for an hour. It’s a fun way to a self portrait series or photos of you just life-ing with your kids.
Tip #3 – Skip the big girl camera.
Kristin of Awesome Ladies Project says,
Sometimes it’s okay to ditch the big camera and pull out your phone to take a self-portrait. It doesn’t require a timer (but there’s an app for that), it doesn’t require you to scarily hold your expensive camera at an awkward (but perfect) angle, and you always have it with you. Some of the best self-portrait moments are when you’re least expecting it. Don’t pass it up just because you don’t have your real camera with you.
#4 – Find the right angle and lighting.
Leah of Bluebird Chic says,
My top tips for taking great self-portraits are all about lighting and angle. For both photos I started by facing a huge window in my (somewhat cluttered) studio space. Neither photo needed any touchups or brightening.
If you compare the two photos, you can see that the second is much more flattering and it’s all about the angles. Start by making sure to hold the camera slightly above you, instead of straight into your face. Even though my body is at a slight angle from the camera, by just lifting my camera slightly higher, my face is suddenly slimmer. In the second photo I tilted my head just a tiny bit to my left, which gave a clearer, more flattering outline to my nose and jawline.
Tip #5 – Switch to manual focus.
Emily of Everbranch Photography says,
Pick your general location, set your camera in live mode, zoom in on your placeholder and adjust your focus. Make sure everyone is in line with that location. Once you set your focus, start shooting!
Have fun! We look forward to seeing your beautiful faces in our social feeds 🙂
