How long have you been involved in memory keeping?
I have been snapping photos and scrapbooking them for over 18 years.
What made you decide to pursue memory keeping?
My interest in photography began at a very early age and my love of scrapbooking has really always been about the photos for me. When I was 17 I remember going through a family album and noticing all of the missing pictures–photos that someone had used or borrowed for some reason and never replaced. I vowed that no one would ever take photos from my photo albums!
Scrapbooking has since become a HUGE part of my life. Not only does it motivate me to keep taking pictures and telling stories about my family’s everyday life, but it also led me to my current job as a freelance creative assistant. My very first job as an admin started 9 years ago with the scrapbooking website, Get It Scrapped, a company I still proudly serve today.
How has your memory keeping evolved over the years?
My photography skills have grown steadily over the years as I moved from various film cameras to digital point and shoots and finally to my digital slr.
When I started scrapbooking, it was as a 12 x 12″ paper scrapper, who loved colorful patterns, fresh techniques and rich layers. I focused mainly on events such as holidays, weddings and the first years of my children’s lives in the beginning. But as life got busier I adopted digital scrapbooking and my pages became more about the photos and stories associated with the moments in between. However, I still let my love of color, pattern and realistic dimension shine thru in my digital pages.
What impact do you want your memory keeping to have on others?
I want to give my family (especially my boys) something to look back on and treasure–a record of our favorite moments and stories. And when future generations look on our family album and read our stories I want them to know that we loved and laughed and truly lived our lives.
What advice do you have to others who might be interested in memory keeping?
Go for it…anyone can be a memory keeper! It starts with a photo and a story–and from there, there really is no right or wrong way to capture your life’s stories.
What’s your favorite thing about your bluebird chic strap?
I actually have several styles and I love them all! The latest addition to my collection though is the Wild Heather Scarf Camera Strap. Not only do I enjoy the bright colors and fun floral print, but I LOVE how comfortable and strong it is. I take my strap hiking/backpacking, traveling, to sporting and scouting events, etc. and it’s so lightweight and silky that I often forget I’m wearing it…until of course someone stops and asks me where they can get one!
