Anna Bowkis is an English country-loving girl who has moved to the bright lights in Hong Kong with her husband and 2 girls. As a mother, she understands the importance of capturing children at all ages and in an environment that they are happy in. That’s why she chooses to photograph using natural light, against the beautiful backdrops in Hong Kong. When Anna hasn’t got a camera in her hand you can find her curled up on the sofa with a good book or making a delicious mess in the kitchen trying to be the next Nigella Lawson!
How long have you been a photographer?
I have been a professional photographer for about 6 years now. I have always had a passion for all things creative and was previously a scrapbooker, teaching and designing all over the world. I originally wanted to be a fashion designer and dreamt off attending St Martins School of Fashion in London. My style of photography brings in my love for fashion, design and colour all in one!
What made you decide to pursue your crafting business?
I have always been a creative from very young remember my dad with a camera in his hands at all times. When I had my first child 17 years ago now (eek!) I was never without a camera , capturing those everyday moments. Then number 2 came along with the digital camera and my world opened up. Firstly scrapbooking , where my love for design and colour could be used with photographs of my children. It then grew from there and in 2012 I started my business Anna Bowkis Photography.
How has your photography evolved over the years?
My photography has evolved over the years as my confidence has grown too. I lived in Hong Kong for 4 years returning back to the UK last summer. Asia holds a very special place in my heart and really does touch all the senses. I have mostly photographed children and families. Asia opened my eyes to everything around me, architecture, food and street photography. I love to be a story teller in my photography , taking everything in that’s around me.
What advice do you have to other women who are thinking of starting their own businesses?
Firstly believe in yourself, you can do this. Being organised is key, I am still learning this LOL. Research your product/service and make sure you stand out from the crowd. What makes you different to everyone else? The answer is YOU.
Its not going to be easy, and don’t let anyone fool you that it is, Juggling motherhood, working life and running a home and business is hard. But you can do it, have your support in place. Talk to your family and friends , and have that support in place, emotionally as well. I believe in working on my personnel development. Read and listen to podcasts. Check out local women in business networking groups as well. Just go for it and good luck!
Which of your business achievements are you most proud of and why?
I have won several awards for my photography here in the UK and Hong Kong and have been published in many publications. I am most proud of starting my business from scratch in Hong Kong and leaving with a successful business. I am now relaunching shortly here in the UK, with a lifestyle blog that will showcase my photography.
What kind of camera(s) do you own and what role does it play in your life?
I own a Nikon D810 and several prime lenses. I love prime lenses as you have to move around your subject and I find Im less likely to miss something! I love the bokeh achieved with prime lenses also. But I am no means a camera snob, and my iPhone is by my side at all times if my Nikon isn’t.
What’s your favorite thing about your bluebird chic strap?
I wear scarves alot, summer and winter! I just love the scarf strap works with my style of dress. The fabric design reminds me of brush strokes as well. Being a creative and loving colour this just had my name on it! Its not easy choosing a fabric strap so many gorgeous designs to choose form. I already have my eye on a couple more!
The scarf style camera strap is comfortable to wear and tres chic!
