This week we’re shining a light on ambassador Cara Mathis of Catcher in the Rye Photography. Read on to find out more about Cara, see some of her work, and find out which bluebird chic strap is her personal favorite!
A lover of the details and all things beautiful in life, Cara began her professional photography journey in July 2017 and has been infatuated ever since. When she’s not shooting photos of her son, decorating her house, and throwing lawn parties, she works for the federal government putting bad guys in jail. Ka-Pow! How long have you been a photographer?
I started photography on July 14th, 2017 — the day my hubby bought me my first DSLR for my birthday! I built my website that day, and the rest is history!
What made you decide to pursue photography?
I’ve always been a photo junkie (the nearly 800 albums on my Facebook account prove it), but I’ve loved being able to capture moments and memories in an almost tangible way — If I can make it look like you’ve reached right into a moment, I’ve done my job!
How has your photography evolved over the years?
For one, I don’t saturate my greens until they’re laser-like in hue anymore haha. And I’ve always been obsessed with the details, but I’m branching out to more wide-angle lens now (Thanks to this year’s hubby birthday gift, my second lens!)
What impact do you want your photography business to have on others?
I want to help people preserve their moments — the happy, the vulnerable, the silly, the loving — each moment and detail in time is a thread in our tapestry, and I want to be the needle that helps hold them all together!
What type of camera do you own, and what role does it play in your life?
I have a Canon 5D Mark IV and it is my sidekick. It goes on almost every adventure with me, and it’s helping me keep a detailed account of the little moments in my life — like watching my two-year-old son evolve into a tiny man. When my family and I moved out to Utah from Washington, DC in 2016, I told my husband I felt like I was missing the little moments of watching my son grow up, unable to capture them the way my mind saw them. But now that I’ve got my little friend, any time I see a moment I know I’ll want to remember for years to come, I can preserve it like a snippet of time itself. It’s been life-changing!
What’s your favorite thing about your bluebird chic strap?
The moment I saw Bluebird Chic straps, I knew I had to have one for myself. As a self-proclaimed aesthete, I love anything beautiful. I try to surround myself with beautiful things. So when I got my camera, I knew I needed a gorgeous strap to accompany me on shoots. I scoured the Internet, but nothing came even close to my standards. Then I stumbled upon Bluebird Chic on Instagram, and immediately my pupils dilated and my heart beat faster — I had found my strap. I hit “Buy,” and I have been obsessed ever since.
Not only are my straps (yes plural, because I have several!) gorgeous additions to my look, but they’re insanely comfortable, too! I never have to worry about them sliding off my camera or letting it crash to the ground; they’re snug and secure. Everyone knows well-placed and beautiful accessories help boost confidence, and my strap is no exception — Whenever I have my camera out in public (so, like, every day), I know it’s my strap that’s getting all the attention. I will continue to rely solely on Bluebird Chic for my straps, even if it means buying a new camera! If I must, I must 😉
