I’m so happy to share the spotlight today with Rahel – I’ve admired her crafting, scrapbooking, and now her photography for a very long time. Everything she does is infused with a light airiness that just lifts you to look at it. The organic, natural feel just feels… natural. Just the way it should.
That’s why I’m excited to dig a little deeper into the life of the amazing lady behind Rahel Menig Photography.
Rahel (pronounced like ‘Michelle’) is originally from Switzerland, but now lives in California and works as a full-time wedding photographer. She’s married to her best friend Adrian since 2010 and they have a furry baby, Leya, their King Shepherd. The three of them love to go on road trips, explore and discover new places, eat ice cream, document life and work in their little veggie garden. You can find Rahel on her website, Rahel Menig Photography.
How long have you been a photographer?
Photography came into my life at an early age and when I turned 16 years I started an apprenticeship in Switzerland, studying photography. Then in 2011 I decided to start my own wedding photography company here in California. I guess that makes it the fourth season as a wedding photographer?
What made you decide to pursue photography?
In the beginning it was just a fun hobby, but I would’ve never thought that one day I would be shooting weddings. After my own wedding I felt like I had something to give other couples and slowly but surely the idea was coming together to start a business.
How would say your photography has changed over the years?
My work has definitely evolved a great deal over the years. My style has become very distinct in a dreamy, soft way. Even more though, the way I interact with my couples, which makes the biggest difference in how the images turn out. From slightly awkward looking (and feeling) to natural looking, relaxed couples. It’s all about making them feel relaxed and at ease, knowing that they can trust me all the way.
What kind of camera(s) do you own and what role do they play in your life?
I’m a sworn in Nikon user and my Pelican Case holds a bunch of D700’s and a selection of lenses – my favorites being the 50/1.4 and the 85/1.4 These two are my workhorses and I couldn’t live without them. Dramatically speaking, of course. When on trips with the family, the 50mm is usually the only lens I bring with me. I’m the lazy kinda gal when it comes to schlepping around gear 😉
Rahel’s love of soft colors and feminine florals inspired the NEW Limited Edition watercolor wedding camera straps. Available in both padded and scarf styles, this design features lightweight cotton lawn fabric with one-of-a-kind patterns hand-painted by yours truly.
What do you love most about your bluebird chic strap?
When Leah said we could help design our own strap, I was over the moon! Knowing that I would love something in a feminine palette, something a bit dreamy, soft and bright, the idea of using watercolor fabric was born. Thanks Leah for this opportunity 🙂
