You might remember that during the month of May I held a little contest in order to get you all to share photos of you and your bluebird chic camera straps in action. I’m so excited to introduce the grand prize winner of our first Share Your Chic Contest.
Emily Ockwig is a stay at home mom to two ridiculously wonderful toddlers and a teenage bonus-kid. She likes to make things and starts projects spontaneously. Emily crafts and sews and creates and also makes last-minute holiday cards from supplies she has on hand in her basement. She loves hanging out with her kids and awesomely patient husband. Tell us how you first became interested in photography?
My friend is a photographer over at Oh, Hello Photo. When my daughter was one, I took a class that Kimi offered on shooting in manual mode and I was hooked. I remember a wonderful friend telling me shortly after having my daughter that the days are long but the years are short. The days are long. But, man, those years fly by. I love taking pictures. I bring my camera everywhere. At the end of that quick year with long days, there are so many moments that you could easily forget. So many stories that can be told through photographs.
When it comes to photography would you call yourself a professional, amateur, hobbyist or somewhere in between?
I’m a professional photographer. It sounds weird to say. I’m a professional. I take photos and capture moments for other people. I still have so much to learn about photography, but I love doing it and people like me and want me to take their photos. Recently, my photography partner and I branched into an Etsy store selling prints.
What kind of camera(s) do you own and what role does it play in your life?
I shoot Nikon and have a D700 and an 810. I love them both. One of them is always with me, usually along with my 50 mm or my 85 mm lens. In January I made a resolution to take photos every day. I don’t think I’ve made it EVERY day, but my 2015 is definitely well documented.
What is your favorite subject to photograph and why?
My kids are my favorite subjects. Matilda is 4 and Wilson is 1 and we have so much fun together. I rarely get smiles from my daughter, not because she’s grumpy, but because she’s busy playing and creating and imagining. I like to capture their moments, whatever is special to them that day, that hour. They change so much and so quickly that I like to get little snapshots of memories for us to laugh about later.
Share one of your favorite photos that you’ve taken and tell us why its your favorite.
This is one of my favorite photos. My lovely friend Katie just moved to Thailand to be a missionary. She’s always been one of my biggest cheerleaders and believed in me long before I did. I love her so. She was the first person to ask me to do her family photos and I was honored when she asked me to do her maternity photos before she left. This is my favorite photo from that session, and I laugh thinking about that moment during the session whenever I see it.
What do you love most about your bluebird chic strap?
These straps are GORGEOUS. I love that the fabrics are lovely, the quality is amazing, and they’re beautiful. I wanted a fun and unique strap for a while before I bought one and kept going back to Blue Bird Chic. Leah’s quality is top notch and I trust her with both my cameras. I like the uniqueness of the camera scarf. I keep it on my D700 and it lets me distribute the weight a little better if I wear my camera cross-body. The camera strap offers a little more padding and that one hangs out on my 810.
