In this post, brand ambassador Nikki of Nikki Tewes Photography shares her tips for using the”one word” approach to accomplish your family goals.
Goals are going to look different for everyone. There are those kind of people who create these grand goals at the beginning of the year and stick to them. I am not one of those people. I envy those people. I tend to get sidetracked and life seems to knock me off course from the most well-intentioned goals.
I decided that 2018 would be different, and my husband agreed.
Tip #1 – Choose a “word of the year” to guide you in your family’s goal
At the end of 2017, my husband and I decided that we would choose a family “word of the year” as our 2018 goal. I get that this isn’t an original idea. My family didn’t create the “word of the year” idea, however, a word is simple and you can really shape it to fit your individual family.
We chose the word “fun.” See how simple that is. My husband works long hours, sometimes seven days a week. I felt like we weren’t seeing him much at all and that the kids were missing out the most.
Tip #2 – Use your “word” to help you to plan ahead and be more intentional
Before picking out our word, we did have fun together as a family. It wasn’t as though we were this boring group who sat at home all day long, but it really made me stop and think. It made me want to be more intentional with our time together. I planned ahead more than I usually do and thought of new things for us to try.
Tip # 3 – Start out small with your “word” and then look at ways to make it bigger!
We started out small and just did extra “fun” things on the weekends.
We did simple things, for example, we made slime one night, one night we went to the movie theater (it was my son’s first trip and we saw Incredibles 2), we made seasonal bucket lists, and we made small weekend trips.
Then we decided in the spring to think a little bigger. My husband and I decided that this was the year that we’d take our first family trip to Disney World. Let me just tell you that we hit the nail on the head with our 2018 goal.
Tip # 4 – Give yourself permission to keep things simple and to be flexible with your “word.”
My suggestion for those who struggle to keep and stick to goals is to start out small. Simplify.
It’s okay to pick just one word and cultivate that to fit your family and your lifestyle
Tip # 5 – Don’t forget to take pictures so you can celebrate your “word’s” success!
I feel as though we accomplished our family goals. I can look back on my year and know that we put our all into a “fun” year with our kids.
We enjoyed this experience so much that we have decided to make this a tradition. We plan to unveil our new family word each year on New Year’s Eve.
Have you done something similar with your family?
I’d love to hear what goals you and your family make together.
