How long have you been a scrapbooker?
I’ve been scrapbooking since I was a sophomore in high school. so about fifteen years now. It started with a love of photography and a trip to the art supply store for a class project. I’ve been hooked ever since.
What made you decide to pursue your business?
I started freelance writing/designing scrapbook content for magazines while in college, I also worked part time in one of the local scrapbook shops. After health issues forced me to reconsider my work options, I founded rukristin, my personal brand. My goal was (and still is) to share my stories and the creative ways in which I document them.
The more time and effort I put into rukristin, the more I found that my passions really lie with helping other women tell their stories as well, and then a short while after I founded The Awesome Ladies Project, my feminist scrapbooking community.
How has your business evolved over the years?
Over the years my business has evolved from being just me wandering around at trade shows, trying to put together the perfect memory-keeping kits to creating an robust web and mobile based platform so that women from around the world can connect to each other, engage in storytelling content, share their own creations, purchase our physical storytelling products and more.
What impact do you want your business to have on others?
I would like to be able to help other women become the best versions of their storytelling selves. I believe that we’re all storytellers inside and I want to help bring out the storyteller in each of us. No matter what your life looks like, you have stories that deserve to be told.
Which of your business achievements are you most proud of and why?
The Awesome Ladies had our first live event here in Michigan this summer. It was a weekend retreat, with a full day of feminist scrapbooking workshops on Saturday, as well as additional activities throughout the weekend.
It was absolutely amazing to have women come together from around the country, sit in a room, and share their stories. It was even more amazing to have been the person who orchestrated the event. I was both honored and humbled to be in the presence of these women and these stories. I cannot wait to host another retreat again next summer.
What’s your favorite thing about your bluebird chic strap?
My bluebird chic strap is totally me because 1) black and white. I’m SO a black and white girl. 2) hand written words. and 3) it’s about memories!! It couldn’t have been any more perfect.
I love my strap because it means I can take my camera with me anywhere. I can bring it to a wedding ceremony, or other formal event and not have to stash my camera every time someone else wants to snap a photo. It’s comfortable on my shoulder, doesn’t dig into my neck, and stays nice and tight — I know it’s not going anywhere.
