Sometimes, I get caught up in the doing of everyday life. Trying to keep up with everything that’s going on becomes this daily sort of treading water business. It’s fun and amazing, but every once in a while I look up and wonder if I’m treading water or the current is carrying me away.
Those are the moments when it’s good to step back and take a deep breath. Back away from the pace that constantly keeps me moving. It gives me just a few minutes to gather my thoughts into coherent sentences that other sane people can understand instead of fragments bursting forth at staccato intervals that require code breaking classes to interpret, like “98!” “Veggies and lemonade!”, or “Rum!”.
My husband has gotten really good at these. When you’ve lived together long enough I think you develop a sort of shorthand for talking. Except when you make the mistake of either not having your coffee in the morning or grabbing something that’s not up to the usual strength of brew that you require for coherency. Then you’re shorthand comes out all jumbled and weird and you end up having to call each other and have an actual conversation to straighten things out. No lie. This has actually happened to us. And we both laugh about it now that the air has cleared and we know what the heck the other person meant. My husband shakes his head and mutters, “I’m never ordering their coffee again. It’s not worth it.”
Please note. We both mostly drink coffee that I brew at home. Of a particular brand that we love. I brew this said coffee to a strength that would help Hercules move mountains. This is beneficial for our communication and functional abilities throughout our busy days.
It’s only when we stop for a bit of a break that we realize just how fast we’re continually moving. And those moments when you finally stop for a break give you an opportunity to sit back and think a little. Maybe read a book that I enjoy. Or trawl around on pinterest. It’s been awesome. And restful. And eventful. And it will be amazing to slide back into a daily routine. I’ve come up with some fun ideas just by virtue of the fact that I’ve slowed down a tiny bit.
