We know that it’s tough staying active when you’re busy, so today we thought we’d share some of the ways that we incorporate exercise into our daily routines to help you reach your fitness goals in the new year.
Below the bluebird chic ambassadors have shared their tips for fitting the task of staying active into their busy schedules.
#1 – Involve the whole family!
Maryam of Hi + Hello Photography says,
Our tradition of having our elf over for Christmas took a silly turn when she started appearing in various moment of our lives, all year round! Here she came at Halloween and she’s carrying a tiny homemade pumpkin and wearing a lion mask. My youngest daughter was dressing up as a lion this year. As you can see here, my daughters wrote some notes to her as soon as they spotted her and in return she left them some Jelly Beans. Since our elf visits us many times a year, mainly in silly situations or when she feels like she’s needed in the house, she became part of our family and we are awaiting her arrival with great excitement when December comes.
Amy of My Letter-Sized Life says,
We love being outdoors in nature and we plan weekly hikes with our kids into our busy schedule during 8 months out of the year. Normally we abandon our hiking routine for the winter months but this year we’re staying active by giving snowshoeing a try!
#2 – Get your walk on, while they get their walk on!
Dia of Dia Meraz Photography says,
Since I don’t always have time to go for a run, I make it a point to walk my dogs around my complex…this is where I score most of my step count for the day. It’s a win win for me and my dogs!
#3 – Make it a “walking or hiking meeting.”
Monika of Internationelle says,
“I love making running outside part of my work week. I don’t feel my best and definitely don’t think as clearly if I don’t get at least SOME activity in my day. So I strive to have “walking meetings” and “hiking interviews” planned into my day.”
#4 – Adopt a “miracle morning” routine.
Dia of Dia Meraz Photography says,
I added 10 minutes of yoga to my “miracle morning” routine. If you’re not familiar with The Miracle Morning, you should check it out. With this approach, even on busy days, I can still incorporate at least a few minutes of yoga into my busy day.
#5 – If all else fails, get your work out in where you can!
- 50 squats (while brushing your teeth at night)
- 50 leg lifts (while brushing your teeth in the morning)
- 30 kitchen counter push-ups (while waiting for tea water to boil)
or from your office chair:
- Arm rest/fist raises – lifting your body up and holding for 30 seconds, repeat three times.
- Leg lifts – lifting one leg up, then the other, repeat 30 times each side.
- Thigh/glute squeeze – tense and squeeze your thigh and glute muscles, hold for 10 seconds, release, repeat three times.
Monika of Internationelle says,
Trying to find time to actually “do a work-out” can be extremely challenging with a busy, always-changing schedule, so I make working out a part of the activities I already do each day. On an extreme day, I may have to get my work out in while brushing my teeth or from my office chair.

BONUS TIP FROM LEAH:
Ask a friend or your partner to be your workout partner, too!
Granted, this only works if you’re equally committed to the idea, but my husband and I started partnering up for walks and workouts a couple of years ago, and I can tell you there are several good things that have come from it. First, on days when I’d be tempted to skip what we’ve scheduled, he’s there with a gentle check in helping motivate me to push through to show up and put in a little time. We all have days when we don’t feel like it after a busy or tough work day, and there are days I give him that gentle nudge, too. Plus, it’s a great time especially when we walk, to share our day and exchange ideas.
