When Bluebird Chic came out with the DIY camera straps I knew I had to make one. I am not a great sewer but my MIL is one of the best that I know. I also knew that my 10-year-old daughter would want to be part of this. She has her own digital camera with her own Bluebird Chic camera strap but she never found a print she LOVED like I did because they aren’t necessarily geared for kids. This was just the perfect opportunity to have some girl time and create something beautiful.
My daughter picked the perfect fabric for a 10-year-old girl. I spotted it before she and I knew it was the one. Sparkles and unicorns.
We went right to grandmas house to get started. The PDF of directions is long and incredibly thorough. Even someone like me who doesn’t sew that often could easily follow along. Everything we needed to assemble the strap came with it the kit. We picked up a few things we needed at the store when we purchased the fabric.
Each step had photos which made it so easy and virtually impossible to screw up. I recommend using a tablet instead of a phone like we did though.
It says so in the PDF, but make sure you have a heavy duty sewing machine otherwise it won’t go through. Having a needle that is meant for leather and thicker material is a good idea too. It gets quick thick when you are adding the leather pieces.
In total it took us about an hour and a half to complete. I am sure if you are someone who is good at sewing and you don’t have to people asking you a million questions about everything you are doing it would go much quicker. This also made me appreciate who much work Leah puts into each one of her straps. I had no idea just how detail goes into every single now.
Once we were finished and I put it on my daughter’s camera she didn’t take it off the rest of the day. She wore it around very proudly.
Overall this project was super fun and perfect for someone who loves to craft and wants to create something that is 100% them!
