Hi there, Kristin here from rukristin: Feminist Scrapbooker and today I’m going to teach you how to create a DIY Patriotic Memory-Journal.
This is a super-simple DIY that you can complete in under an hour. We’ll be using star-shaped cutouts (I’ve also included a free downloadable template below) to create a reverse-stencil. Then we’ll use some white paint, and create a unique cover for our journal.
This is a perfect keepsake for you to document patriotism this summer, whatever it means for you. If patriotism is spending time (and photos) with your family and loved ones at a July 4th cook-out, you can turn this into a quick scrapbook. If patriotism is about essays on what being a part of your town/state/country means to you, turn it into a photo or writing journal.
Supplies Needed:
- Notebook
- DIY Star Cut Outs (available as a free download)
- Repositionable Adhesive
- White Paint
- Paintbrush
- FREE Stencil Template
You can use any notebook for this project. I chose to use these awesome red notebooks from Scout Books. You can pick them up in a bunch of different colors in packages of ten in their shop. They’re fantastic for quick and easy DIY projects, they have really great chipboard covers, the colors are super pretty, and this worn red was perfect for my patriotic DIY.
Step One:
Cut out all the stars and place them where you think they look best on your notebook.
Step Two:
Adhere the stars to the notebook using repositionable adhesive (you want to make sure they’ll come up after you paint over them).
Step Three:
Using white paint and a paintbrush, start to paint directly over the stars, covering the entire cover of the notebook. Let dry. Repeat at least once more or until you are satisfied with the paint coverage on your notebook (I used three coats total).
Step Four:
Carefully peel off the stars and add embellishments to the front cover if you’d like. I added the year using stickers, but this would be a great place for some hand doodling, your family name, or anything else to make this project more uniquely you.
Another DIY Idea:
If you’re not feeling the paint, just print out the stars and adhere them to the front of the notebook for an even easier DIY Notebook!
Thank you so much for letting me share this DIY project with you.
