Ugly Sweater Day: Capturing Silly Holiday Traditions

December 16, 2017

So yesterday was Ugly Sweater Day and it got me to thinking of all of the other “silly” holiday traditions people might celebrate. When I asked our ambassadors to share some of their silly traditions they did not disappoint.

Have a look at these silly, yet fun holiday traditions and share your own traditions with us in the comments below…

#1 – Hula Gingerbread Men

Marcie of  Marcie in Mommyland says,

One of my family’s favorite holiday traditions is to make hula gingerbread people! When I was younger, I spent a lot of Christmases on Kauai. So, the holidays always make me think of kids hula dancing to “Mele Kalikimaka” and seeing Surfing Santa decorations! Now, my kids and I decorate our gingerbread people so they are wearing grass skirts, Aloha shirts, board shorts and leis. I like bringing a cultural element to our holiday festivities!

#2 – Doggie Dress-up

Vanessa of Vanessa Marie Photography says,

“Usually, I’m a little bit of a bahhumbug come the holiday season, but I always dress my dog up for the occasion. When working with animals, you have to be patient and have an incentive for them. In my dog, Cosmo’s case, being patient and holding a treat with one hand while snapping with the other hand worked out best. So for all you pet parents, remember, the pet is part of the family too!”

#3 – Elf on the Shelf…All Year-Round!

Our tradition of having our elf over for Christmas took a silly turn when she started appearing in various moment of our lives, all year round! Here she came at Halloween and she’s carrying a tiny homemade pumpkin and wearing a lion mask. My youngest daughter was dressing up as a lion this year. As you can see here, my daughters wrote some notes to her as soon as they spotted her and in return she left them some Jelly Beans. Since our elf visits us many times a year, mainly in silly situations or when she feels like she’s needed in the house, she became part of our family and we are awaiting her arrival with great excitement when December comes.

#4 – Silly Holiday Cards

Amy of My Letter-Sized Life says,

Every year my sister and her family out do themselves with silly holiday card ideas – ugly sweaters, surf’s up, back to the 80s – you name, it they’ve done it! My sister curates their outfits and chooses stock photos to inspire their poses. They come over all dressed up and I snap photos of them in front of my garage (which is a nice substitute if you don’t have a large white backdrop).

We all have so much fun with it and her friends and family are always looking forward to what they’ll do in next year’s card!
