As the holiday season approaches, we always try to set aside time for giving outside of our family and friend circle – to think about the world, those in need, and what we have that we can give to help them. I snapped a couple of quick iphone photos while we were getting ready this year (I keep my bigger camera mostly for work). This is the boys packing boxes for Operation Christmas Child. My husband and I love seeing how excited they get to choose and pack gifts that they would love to receive.
Another quick snap on the phone from Saturday – we spent several hours packing an international shipping container with new and gently used donations to send off to those in need. It’s so encouraging to see our growing boys dive in and understand the importance of giving.
I have to admit, spending the time has made my heart feel lighter. It can seem so small, but the only way to change the world is one person at a time – by “being the change that we want to see”. And hopefully by working to instill this same awareness in our children, we take it one step further. It doesn’t matter what organization, shelter, or charity you support, or if you are independently working quietly on your own to help others. What’s important is the doing. The act of being present and caring.
I’d love to hear how you reach out to others, too! I think sometimes it’s easy to believe that no one else is giving, sharing, and caring when we wake up every day to hear stories of violence and bigotry. It’s too easy to think that what we do can’t make a difference. But one, and one, and one… becomes a movement. I can’t wait to see your comments!
