What is the best part about being a photographer?
I love making people feel good about themselves. One of the best compliments I’ve ever gotten is that I feel like a friend vs. a photographer. I really pride myself in getting to know my clients and love seeing them view their photos and think “wow…I look great!” or “wow, this is such a precious moment!”. It’s honestly what I love most about it.
What impact do you want your business to have on others?
I want people to love their photos, first and foremost. But, I want them to love the entire experience even more. I want people to walk away feeling good about all of it. About the time we spent together, the money they spend, and the quality of my work. It means a LOT to me when people put their trust in my creative vision and I want to do a good job for them. I also love to empower young women and allow them to feel beautiful and valued in their own skin.
Which of your business achievements are you proud of and why?
Recently I was published in Beauty Revived, a print magazine . That was pretty awesome. Honestly, my latest achievements are more my own goals over recognition by others. I recently shot three styled shoots that I’ve been dying to create and watch come to life. Having the time, means, and models to help me achieve this has been paramount in refreshing my creative soul!
What advice do you have to women starting their own businesses?
I have so many things I wish I would have had someone say to me when I was first starting out. The way I give advice now, actually, plays a big role in the things that were ‘sugar coated’ for me in the beginning. Running a business is not easy. You have to hustle. Work your business. Promote yourself. But most of all, you have to BELIEVE in yourself and KNOW YOUR WORTH out of the box. It’s a lot easier to charge what you should be charging in the beginning, even if you have a slower start, than give away the farm and then expect people to meet you at what your prices are once you raise them. It’s hard work, and it’s a living for a lot of us. Quality work is worth it!
What kind of camera(s) do you own and what role does it play in your life?
I am currently shooting on the Nikon D750. A lot of people have asked me recently if I’m going to jump to the brand new 850, and the answer is, not unless I have to (ie. if my current camera goes kaput, etc.). I absolutely love it. It is a BEAST in low light and the colors and white balance are spot on. It’s my favorite camera I’ve ever owned. And I’ve owned a lot!
What’s your favorite thing about your bluebird chic strap?
I’m a huge fan of floral prints, and the almost-vintage feel of my bunch of blooms strap. It’s so versatile in color and material. I live in the South and it gets HOT here during summer shoots. The strap is so breathable and I get so many compliments on it!
Every bluebird chic strap is so unique. I love feeling a little different from the rest when I shoot, and my strap makes me happy in that regard. I also love that it’s stylish, and safe! I’m really bad about throwing my gear around sometimes, and I always know my camera won’t go crashing to the ground when I wear it!
