Hello! My name is Meggan. I am a mom of two adventurous little girls and business owner. Photography has been a huge passion of mines since i was a kid. When I had my daughter I decided to turn it into a business. I am also a lover of all things planner, so I started a business creating planner inserts. I have had my insert business now for a little over two years now. It has been a blessing being able to create and inspire others.
How long have you been a photographer and business owner?
I have been a photographer since 2013 and have been part of the planner community since 2014.
What made you decide to pursue photography and owning you own business?
I have always had a love for photography since I was very young. Once I had my daughter I knew I wanted to take quality pictures to capture all of her moments, so I invested in my first DSLR. A year or so later I met my great friend Dia Meraz (also another brand ambassador) and she took me under her wing and taught me everything she knew about photography. From there i was so motivated to get my business up and running. As our friendship went on Dia had introduced me to the planner world. I love to be organized so I instantly fell in love. As time went on I wanted to customize my planner more and more and began to make inserts for myself. I made a Instagram just for my planner pictures and found out that there was a market for inserts. So with my entrepreneurial mind I began my second business Hurry up and Plan.
How has your photography evolved over the years?
When starting a business it’s very exciting. And in that excitement you tend to try just about everything and feel you need everything to be successful. I have learned that over time you will find your style so it’s ok to try everything in the beginning, but know when to stop and focus. Sometimes less is more. With my planner business I stepped away from adding stickers to my shop because the market was very saturated and I wanted to have a main focus on my inserts. With my photography i found that consistency is key. Find a style that draws people in but that you can continue for many years.
What advice do you have to other women who are thinking of starting their own businesses?
Starting a business in the beginning is scary. My advice to you is to research and make sure you know what you are getting into. Some stuff you will just have to learn as you go, which is ok. Do let not knowing something hold you back from starting. I would get a small business plan in line for yourself so when people come to you, you are ready to answer their questions. When you feel you are ready to start your business, just do it! Be confident in what you do and the product you are creating. If you show insecurity, others will too! One of the biggest things that has helped me was finding support groups. Facebook is full of groups with shop owners in the same field you are, join them, make new friends.
What impact do you want your business to have on others?
I want people to know it is possible to embrace what you are good at and make it your passion. We get stuck following the paths of what other people are doing and become so unhappy. If you enjoy doing something and feel you can make it a business, you will put more effort into that than you ever will a job you hate going to everyday.
What kind of camera(s) do you own and what role do they play in your life?
I own a Nikon D610, this is my main camera for any photo shoots I do and for product photos. My most recent camera is a Sony a6000. I use this camera for recording YouTube videos. And last but not least my iPhone. My iPhone plays a huge role in my businesses. It’s my way of taking a quick picture so I can post to social media.
What’s your favorite thing about your bluebird chic strap?
I fell in love with the Indigo Starburst strap. I have a thing for vintage looks and I felt this strap made that perfect vintage but yet elegant look. My favorite thing about this strap is it’s unique look, yet it is still comfortable to wear.
