With Memorial Day coming up I wanted to take the time to give thanks to those men and women who serve their country and the family and friends who support them. Our ambassadors have shared some amazing photos of servicemen and women below and they’ve shared a few tips to inspire your own photographs of men and women in uniform.
#1 – Capture servicemen and women in their element.
Monica of Internationelle says,
So much of photography involves the same principles many military members utilize when using a weapon, especially breathing. Breathing is so key in getting sharp images, especially if you’re on a moving boat, as we were in this photo. To minimize potential movement, I hold my breath as I pull the trigger, so to speak. Slower shutter speeds and increased ISO help in getting images when your “tripod” happens to be rocking. For this image, since shooting into a sunset can be tricky, I used the sailor’s silhouette as a focal point, and used a variety of exposures before settling on this one. Using the bracketing feature on the camera to really capture the true and best colors also help.
#2 – Capture servicemen and women coming home.
Dia of Dia Meraz Photography says,
We all love to see photographs of soldiers reuniting with loved ones…but don’t forget the little furry ones too. This little guy loves and misses our soldier, just as much as we do.
#3 – Capture servicemen and women with their family.
Kim of Apple of Our Eye Photography says,
For anyone who proudly serves the military, we can never even begin to thank them enough for their time and dedication to their country. Many times they aren’t alone in this sacrifice. Spouses are a constant support taking on many responsibilities, having to accept continuous change, and often accepting of spending as much time apart as together. The strength these men and women have is inspiring. These relationships should be celebrated. Be sure to thank them BOTH for the sacrifices they’ve made and continue to make so that we may live freely and safely here. Use your talent and gifts to remind them of the love and respect they have for one another and their country.
Addy of Chic Planner Girl says,
I have the honor of not being just a mom to these three boys but to be their inspiration, their motivation and their hero. I have the honor to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps and love setting an example for my boys. Being able to capture pictures of our men and women in their uniform with their children is most admirable.
#4 – Capture servicemen and women with their comrades.
Monica of Internationelle says,
These gentlemen were so happy upon graduating, that it felt right to capture their happiness and mood using the bright light and snow to create a joyful image. There is nothing like natural light! To brighten up natural light images, upping the ISO is key, so the camera becomes more light sensitive. In this instance, a lens hood proved to be vital, as well, to keep glare down. Exposure compensation also comes in handy when shooting subjects outdoors, as it can brighten up an otherwise lackluster photo.
#5 – Capture the man or woman behind the uniform.
Tricia of Made with Love Crafter says,
My husband has been in the military for 13 years. I have tons of pictures of special ceremonies and fancy uniforms. Now the most important thing to capture is that moment he comes home from a long day at work and gets greeted with a big hug and curious eyes from our children. Those are the moments that speak volumes about why he does what he does. That is the true person behind the uniform.

I was inspired to take this photograph of my daughter after finding Devin Mitchell’s Veteran Vision Project on the internet. I wanted to capture her two worlds, together and I love the way it turned out!
Thanks again to our wonderful servicemen and women for their courage and sacrifice. May we cherish those who are still with us and always remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
