I’m at that amazing, but sometimes tough spot in the growth of my business where I can’t quite handle everything on my own. So I made the decision to search for a little help – both on the administrative side {for newsletters, shop updates and regular blog postings}, and the sewing – so that I can keep up with orders, and have spare time to create the new products that I’m planning to offer in the shop!
That’s why I’m so blessed to be able to welcome Amy as my new administrative assistant and contract sewist! She’s an amazing, creative, talented, woman and I’m so glad that God has brought her into my life! Here’s a bit about Amy!
Tell us a bit about you:
My name is Amy Kingsford and am a happy wife and blessed mother from Northern Utah. I love digital scrapbooking, taking photos of my two beautiful boys and stumbling upon good food, good books and good music. I also enjoy hiking, camping and geocaching with my family.
Favorite hobby: I spend most of my free time capturing my families memories in my digital scrapbook pages. I started scrapbooking more than 14 years ago and switched to primarily digital scrapbooking after the birth of my second son as it fits better with my busy life and smaller creative space. However I still enjoying playing with actual paper every now and again!
Favorite movie/tv series: I’m kinda of a TV nut! I have lots of shows on my must watch list right now, including Revenge, Once Upon A Time, Downton Abbey and Grey’s Anatomy. Right now though, I am re-watching 7 seasons of West Wing on Netflix, one of my all-time favorite TV shows.
How long have you been sewing? My mother started teaching me to sew when I was five, so if we do the math that means I’ve been sewing for 26 years! I had lots of great sewing influence in my life including that from my mother and her mother and my grandmother on father’s side as well. When my mom first sat me down to sew there was a phone book under the pedal and I was stitching along lines she’d drawn on a piece of paper without my needle threaded. Twelve years later I started college with the intention of graduating with a degree in Apparel Design and Marketing. Then somehow I wandered from the path and changed my major to Political Science, yet here I am today, back to my roots and helping Leah to sew these lovely handmade camera straps…that’s what I call serendipity!
Ever had any major sewing disasters? I heard many sewing horror stories from my mom and grandmothers growing up, but fortunately nothing too horrendous ever happened to me. Though I do remember once while I was doing some late night sewing on my serger, I totally spaced out and forgot to remove the pins. I cut through three or four pins with the attached knife before I even realized and it made a horrible noise as it became stuck in the 5th pin. That night I learned an expensive but important lesson…don’t sew tired!
Share one quirk: I am a habitual to-do list maker. I will make several hand-written to-do lists in a day and leave them scattered all about our house. The funny thing is I rarely use them and rather I use the action of writing the tasks over and over as a way of committing them to memory. Towards the end of each week my husband starts to gather them all up and asks for permission to throw away the evidence of my “beautiful mind.”
How has being able to work from home impacted you and your family? I was fortunate enough to start working from home just before the birth of my second child. Before that I was working full-time hours and trying to juggle schedules with my husband who also worked full-time–so that one of us could be home with our child. At the time its was terrifying to leave my job to stay at home, but now I know its the best decision I’ve ever made! It feels absolutely wonderful to be able to be a full-time mother, while contributing to my family monetarily and working with people I really admire and helping them with tasks that I truly love.
Happy weekend!
