Let me start this off by saying that I know it’s tough to keep physically fit when you’re a family. You have to make a conscious choice every day to be involved in things that incorporate activity not just for your children, but for the adults in the family as well. It’s too easy to get caught up in being busy taking care of others, or working, or chores, or fast meals, and before you know it, you’re not well anymore.
To be honest, that where I find myself today. Oh, I’m not super sick – but I do/did have high blood pressure. Just high enough to be concerned. And since I want lots of years ahead with my family, my business, and life in general, it was time to make some changes.
We already eat a really healthy diet, so for us, it was about incorporating more physical exercise – getting moving enough that our hearts were pumping strong and strengthening our lungs. So I’m here today with a gentle reminder, and then I’ll talk about our family challenge.
As adults – men or women who are caregivers especially, we sometimes think it’s selfish to take time to take care of ourselves. It’s not. Taking care of your physical, mental and emotional self makes you a better person, which in turn makes you a better caregiver. I don’t have to tell you that extreme cases of neglecting yourself lead to serious problems that can take you away from loved ones permanently.
So my challenge to you – find thirty minutes to exercise five times a week. Family activities are awesome. We decided to run a 5k as a family Labor Day weekend, so we train at least two days a week together! I’ll be the first to admit that my times are not great. But I’m doing it. And guess what? In just two weeks of running, both my husband’s and my blood pressure have dropped at least twenty points each. Booyah!
I really believe in this, and I’d love to see others take on the challenge! I’m still thinking about the official details, so look for a post soon with a spot to link up your personal or family activities to keep you fit. I’ll be hosting a drawing for those that participate that will include a prize!
